In the UEFA Women’s Champions League final Barcelona was facing Lyon for the second time in three years. The French giants had beaten them 3-1 in 2022 to handing Barcelona a second consecutive title, but Barcelona bounced back in the 2023 edition by beating Wolfsburg 3-2 in a dramatic final. Two years later in 2024, Barcelona clinched the cup to complete a treble of titles after winning 2-0 at San Mames with goals from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas.

Barca and Lyon are two of the most successful clubs in European women’s football competitions over the last fifteen years.
