UEFA Women's Champions League Format How It Works

Barcelona are favorites for a third successive UEFA Women’s Champions League title and fourth European triumph in five years in the 2024/25 season. The group stage of the competition was started in October to pave the way to some exciting fixtures between Europe’s best clubs.

UEFA Women's Champions League Format Explained

Unlike the changes seen in men’s European competitions this season, such as the introduction of the "Swiss Model" in the Champions League and Europa League, the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) maintains its more familiar structure. The competition features 16 teams divided into four groups of four, with each team playing home and away fixtures, resulting in six group-stage matches per team.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals, where the group winners will be seeded for the draw. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will follow a two-legged, home-and-away format, while the final will take place on neutral ground at Lisbon's Estadio José Alvalade.

Looking Ahead: Future Changes

However, this will be the last season fans see the traditional format in the Women’s Champions League. Beginning next year, the competition will align with the men's tournament, introducing a single league phase and expanding the number of participating teams, similar to the new structure in the men's Swiss Model.
