Tom Brady, and David Beckham Attend Football’s ‘Hollywood Derby’ As Birmingham City Beat Wrexham
Wrexham is co-owned by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and NFL great Tom Brady, who was part of a takeover at Birmingham City in 2023.
While English third-tier football is not known for its star players, the match on Monday saw Birmingham defeat Wrexham 3-1 when NFL legend Tom Brady beat film stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. In that region, Brady is a minority shareholder of promotion-contending Birmingham while Reynolds and McElhenney are in charge of the Football League One leaders. The engagement at St Andrew’s Park, home to Birmingham witnessed more pre-game star power than what transpired during the game.
Brady sat next to former England skipper David Beckham and one of Beckham’s sons alongside high-profile pundit Gary Neville who had also played with him at Manchester United and England.
Meanwhile, Wrexham was suffering from their first league defeat of the season as McElhenney was there, whereas Birmingham was still unbeaten.
Reynolds who played Deadpool and McElhenney from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia owned Wrexham stock in 2020 but this takeover was unexpected and became part of the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary series that transformed into global famed club in previous years.
Wrexham has since made a meteoric ascent from the fifth-tier National League to League One with consecutive promotions.
On the contrary, Birmingham has undergone an unprecedentedly horrible period in the recent past since Brady was part of the 2023 takeover led by his close friend Tom Wagner who hails from the US.
Brady, who retired in 2023 after spending 23 seasons in NFL started out as a quarterback for New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers which led him to 7 Super Bowl Championships.
However, last season saw them getting relegated into League One for the first time since 1995 where they had six managers during their disorderly campaign including Wayne Rooney – a legend from Manchester United – whose miserable 83-day reign ended with his dismissal.
Things seem to turn around though with Monday’s win lifting Birmingham up to par on points with Wrexham but having played one game less according to former Tottenham assistant coach Chris Davies.
Wrexham was ahead early doors thanks to Jack Marriott’s strike however £10 million ($13 million) worth signing Jay Stansfield levelled for Birmingham almost immediately and then headed them into the lead on 52 minutes.
Still within seven minutes Japan midfielder Tomoki Iwata scored a wonderful goal that made it 3-1.
However, just like most exciting movies from Hollywood, there was an unexpected turn of events that saw Birmingham losing one player after Krystian Bielik got his second yellow card for having made an irresponsible foul on Andy Cannon.
Nonetheless, Wrexham never seemed capable of executing the ‘comeback drive’ often linked with Brady’s stellar career because they managed to beat the actors’ team.
