It brought Liverpool manager Arne Slot to leave fans possibly confused about the possible presence of Federico Chiesa for the next match against Crystal Palace.
During a press conference where Slot was preparing the team for the match at Selhurst Park, he informed the media that Chiesa had not trained intensively for the past few days.
“Chiesa has not practiced with the team for the last two days,” Slot said. “He came in today to test if he could and if he can then I still have a decision to make. We play with twenty players only and he has not trained, we have to check his fitness level. It is up to us whether he comes along or not.”
Chiesa took some time last season to make an impact at Liverpool
Chiesa, who has dealt with injuries in the last couple of years, got his first start for Liverpool in the EFL Cup against West Ham last week. He set up Diogo Jota in that match, but has not played since and came off after only 20 minutes versus Bologna and in the Premier League this season. Still, Chiesa could be more of a bench player this year because Liverpool has a lot of options upfront.
Harvey Elliott is sidelined due to an ankle problem and has not featured for more than eight minutes in the current campaign. Slot did not have any information about Elliott’s state, though the player may come back after the break in the international fixtures.
The Red of Liverpool, incumbents at the summit of the premier league will be out for continuity the same. In the light of doubt surrounding Chiesa’s availability, Slot may have to bank on Diogo Jota to fill the void of Darwin Nunez in starting formation for a difficult away trip to Selhurst Park.
