Erik ten Hag has wished Manchester United fans "not only success, trophies, and glory" following his sacking after a poor start to the season. Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim was confirmed on Friday as the Dutchman's permanent successor and will take up the role on 11 November.
Ten Hag led United to victory in the League Cup final and a third-place finish in the Premier League in 2023, followed by an FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in his second season. But United finished eighth in the league and the Dutchman paid the price for a poor start to the new season.
The former Ajax coach warmly thanked the fans in a statement released by his representatives SEG on Friday. "Thank you for always being there for the club," he said. “Whether it was an away game or a tough game at Old Trafford, your support has been unwavering.
"The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying, thanks to you.
"I felt it many times. In away games, it gave me and the team an incredible feeling to hear the cheers of United fill the stadiums of the opposition, if the game was in England, in Europe, or during the summer tour."
He also thanked the club's staff for their "unwavering support in good times and bad". Ten Hag said he will "treasure" the trophies he won during his time at Old Trafford.
"Of course, my dream was to bring more trophies to the club," he said. "Unfortunately, this dream has come to an end.
"I wish all Manchester United fans only success, trophies, and glory. Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. Thank you for this chapter of my life. Eric"
Ten Hag was sacked after Sunday's 2-1 defeat at West Ham, which left United in 14th place in the Premier League.
Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy oversaw a 5-2 Leicester Cup win over Leicester on Wednesday and is now preparing to lead the team into Sunday's league game against Chelsea.
