Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr Match Sparks Outrage in India – Here's Why
The AFC Champions League match between Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr has been transferred from Iran to Iran due to security issues, but the change has caused outrage in India, especially the Mohun Bagan Super Giants of Kolkata.
Al-Nassr was supposed to play Esteghlal Tehran in Iran but due to security concerns, the match was shifted.
This angered Mohun Bagan, who had to relinquish their AFC Champions League qualification match against Iranians Tractor SC after they declined a journey to Tabriz for a match on October 2.
The Indian club had also expressed the same concern earlier about the safety of players and the staff but it was not given the consideration that it deserved by the AFC.
Why are the Indian fans so angered by the change of the time of their beloved star Ronaldo? A Mohun Bagan spokesman told the Associated Press: “For the AFC, failure to treat Mohun Bagan on an equal footing as the management does to its club would amount to unequal treatment.
”We still convey our concern as it relates to the instability and the inherent insecurity in the region especially as it relates to the players and the coaching crew of the Iranian team.”
The newspaper reported from Mohun Bagan that they have time and again warned the government of the volatile situation in Iran but their voice is not heard by the government.
The ISL club is now pinning its hopes on getting back into the game as other teams including Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr are seen to be getting better treatment from the AFC.
The situation has attracted the concern of Indian football fans who believe that their team is privileged to receive a raw deal while other clubs are realizing positive adjustments in the security amenities.
