PSG could have displaced Montpellier at the summit of the French league after they were forced to a 1-1 deadlock with Nice on Sunday evening. This is so because Monaco maintains the top position in the standings ahead of the upcoming international break. Nice scored the first goal in the interval when a shot from the Tunisian full-back Ali Abdi hit the bar and went in. Nevertheless, PSG came back to the battle in the second half, after Luis Enrique substituted Randal Kolo Muani with Lee Kang-in.
Nuno Mendes netted the equalizer for Spain after converting the shot from outside the box in the 52nd minute thanks to the assist of Ousmane Dembélé. However, even as this could be said to have lacked force, it nestled in the bottom corner. Dembélé, returned to the starting lineup after being left out for PSG’s midweek Ligue 1 defeat to Arsenal, A Marquinhos’ header nearly gave PSG the victory as it struck the post but the equalizer never came.
The PSG coach Luis Enrique said that he liked the way his players performed in the second half and gave a positive spin to PSG’s start of the season, saying they have won only one of their last four games. The result brought PSG second place in the French League with a two-point difference from Monaco. Well, I believe that it has been a good start. It is becoming interesting,” Luis Enrique said after the match while he avoided reproaching Kolo Muani, even though he substituted him.
On the other hand, Monaco was not relegated for this match and, with goals from Thilo Kehrer and Folarin Balogun, they won a two-zero one against Rennes on Saturday. Marseille occupies the third place and failed to beat the last club, Angers, losing only 1-1) on Friday, while Reims in the fourth position defeated Montpellier 4-2.
In other matches, Brest thrashed Le Havre 2-0 in their Ligue One match after a midweek 4-0 Champions League win while Strasbourg had to share the point with Lens 2-2 after a game full of twists and turns. Lyon wanted better and is back to winning ways in the past year; they got their fourth straight victory after beating Nantes 2-0. Lyon scored through Nicolas Tagliafico to give them the lead before Nantes’ defender Nicolas Pallois scored an own goal and made it Lyon’s night.
Lyon occupies the eighth position on the current standings list and could be considered a team that demonstrated a breakthrough performance after a rather low start.
