Napoli See Off Fiorentina To Top Serie A In Rivals' Absence

Napoli took advantage of a 3-0 win over their Supercoppa Italiana rivals Fiorentina on Saturday to go top of the table.

Napoli took advantage of their Supercoppa Italiana Fiorentina 3-0 win on Saturday to go top of the table. Antonio Conte's side is three points ahead of Atalanta thanks to a superb individual goal from David Neres in the 29th minute, Romelu Lukaku's penalty just after half-time, and Scott McTominay in the 68th minute. Saturday's victory in Florence was Napoli's fourth in a row in Italy's first division and further strengthens their claim for a fourth league title after their disastrous Scudetto defense last season.

"We are proud of what we are doing, having 44 points after 19 games would have been unthinkable at the beginning of the season," Conte's assistant Cristian Stellini told DAZN.

However, Napoli have played one more game than Atalanta and two more than defending champions Inter Milan, who miss the league this weekend due to the Supercup.

Inter, who are four points behind Napoli, will face local rivals AC Milan in the Supercup final in Saudi Arabia on Monday, having beaten Atalanta in the semifinals.

Atalanta will play their next match of the day when they host Juventus on January 14, while Bologna travel to Inter the following day.

Fiorentina are sixth and 12 points off the title after their third defeat in four games.

The hosts were left frustrated by Moise Kean's magnificent goal, which was momentarily ruled out for a handball after Neres broke through the Fiorentina defense and hit David de Gea with his shot.

Neres started in an unusual three-man attack for Napoli, which included full-back Leonardo Spinazzola due to injuries to Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

"They deserved the win, they were much more efficient than us and punished us for the smallest mistake," said Fiorentina coach Raffaele Palladino.

Earlier, Venezia remained second from bottom after a 1-1 draw at home to Empoli. Elsewhere, Verona, reduced to ten men, held Udinese to a 0-0 draw and moved five points clear of the relegation zone.
