Monaco started the day at the summit of Ligue 1 with victory at the weekend against Rennes 2-1 and is now three points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning champions. Thilo Kehrer and Folarin Balogun got the goals that earned the victory for Monaco, which climbed to 19 points. Lyon will get the chance for a repeat when they play against Toulouse on Sunday while PSG, who are only one point behind with a better goal difference, will be in action against Nice.
FC Monaco’s Adi Hütter also admitted that his team played a good match but he also stated that the season is long and should not be compared to a sprint but with a 400-meter race.
The rain-soaked match at Brittany was complete within the first twenty-two minutes in which all three goals were scored. Kehrer put Monaco ahead from a corner by Eliesse Ben Seghir. Rennes leveled the match shortly after with a powerful shot from a distance from Ludovic Blas. But Balogun made sure of the victory, scoring from a through ball by Ben Seghir from the right-back position.
In other fixtures, Lille moved to fourth on the log after they defeated Toulouse 2-1 in a match that was Rwanda’s will Gracia lands first league’s second leg. Former Real Madrid youth player, Angel Gomes equalized for Lille in the second half after Moroccan forward, Zakaria Aboukhlal had given Toulouse the lead in the first half of the game. But the match was finally decided by an individual brilliance work by Mitchel Bakker in the 72nd minute.
Elsewhere in the league, Saint-Etienne won 3-1 to Auxerre to take them out of the drop zone, with a hat-trick by Zuriko Davitashvili. The Georgian winger was active throughout and scored twice before sealing his hat trick many minutes to the end.
Sunday’s sets include the clash between Lyon and Nantes as well as the Reims-Lens confrontation before PSG encounters ninth-position Nice.
