Marseille Hit Five To Close Gap On PSG In Ligue 1

Marseille closed the gap on leaders Paris Saint-Germain to seven points at the top of Ligue 1 after beating Le Havre 5-1 at the Velodrome on Sunday

Marseille closed the gap on leaders Paris Saint-Germain to seven points at the top of Ligue 1 after beating Le Havre 5-1 at the Vélodrome on Sunday, as the season approached its halfway point. Valentin Rongier, Bilal Nadir, Neal Maupay, Elye Wahi, and Ulisses Garcia all scored for Roberto De Zerbi's side, which also moved three points clear of third-placed Monaco with the win. Marseille have won five of their last six games in all competitions and have scored nine goals in two games over the two-week winter break.

Rongier opened the scoring from distance in the 25th minute and Nadir fired low into the far corner to double the lead, the 21-year-old scoring his first goal for the first team in just his second Ligue 1 start

Maupay, who is on loan from Everton in a deal that will become a permanent transfer at the end of the season, headed in Marseille's third goal before the break.

Nadir, starting in the absence of the ill Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, did not reappear in the second half as Marseille added a fourth goal in the 66th minute when Mason Greenwood crossed for substitute Wahi.

Garcia, also coming off the bench, completed the scoring for the home team as De Zerbi's men scored five goals in a Ligue 1 match for the third time this season.

Le Havre, who are in the relegation zone, reduced the deficit late on when former Marseille player André Ayew headed home.

PSG beat Monaco 4-2 away in December, just before the winter break, in a game that advanced as the two sides meet for the Champions League trophy in Qatar on Sunday.

The Parisians won this match 1-0 to claim the first trophy of the French season.

Champions League opener Brest lost 2-0 at Angers on Sunday, leaving them in 12th place in Ligue 1 at the halfway point of the season next weekend.

Toulouse produced a surprise 1-0 win at Lens thanks to a Zakaria Aboukhlal penalty, while Strasbourg came from behind to beat Auxerre 3-1 in Alsace.

Lyon, Nice, and Saint-Etienne also won this weekend.
