Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe's new football structure kept the Ten Hag in charge after the FA Cup win but parted ways with the manager just five months after that success at Wembley. United lost 2-1 at West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday, their fourth defeat in nine league games, and Ten Hag was sacked on Monday.
Ten Hag relied heavily on the summer transfer window and signed Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Manuel Ugarte, but the results were poor. The Dutchman's spending in his time in charge of United topped £600m and he failed to capitalize on a brilliant first season which saw United finish third and win the Carabao Cup. United contacted other managers before last season's FA Cup final. The ten Hag oversaw a resounding victory over Manchester City at Wembley and Ineos decided to extend his contract despite overwhelming evidence suggesting he should be sacked.
The statement confirming Ten Hag's dismissal said: "Erik Ten Hag has left his role as manager of Manchester United's men's first team. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and has led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Eric for all he has done during his time with us and we wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as interim coach, supported by the current coaching staff, while a permanent coach has been recruited.
Ratcliffe made sweeping changes after acquiring a minority stake in United and there were mixed reactions to the Ten Hag left after overseeing the most defeats in all competitions since 1977/78.
Although United won the FA Cup last season, they finished eighth in the Premier League, their lowest finish in the top flight, and recorded a negative goal difference.
