Manchester City announced on Wednesday that Rodri would be out of action leaving the pitch in the 2-2 match against Arsenal with ligament injuries on his right knee.
Even as the extent of the problem has not as yet been ascertained, Valencia has been visiting specialists in Spain after he was substituted in the first half of the match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. In a statement, City added, “The assessment continues to be conducted to determine the nature and severity of the injury together with prognosis for the player.”
Earlier reports indicated that Rodri could near-season absence was a possibility. His absence would undermine City’s prospects of clinching a fifth consecutive Premier League title and the fight to get back the premier European club tournament, the Champions League.
After City’s triumph against Watford 2-1 in the League Cup on Tuesday, Guardiola admitted it would be a complicated issue to deal with de Bruyne’s absence.
“Rodri is indispensable,” said Guardiola. ‘When a team is missing the best midfielder in the world for an extended period, yes, it is a setback’. But my task is to look for a possibility to keep us competitive, as we were many hours ago.”
Two things he had to say were “If at all there is a player that cannot be replaced then it becomes a duty that the entire team will relocate and that is what we shall do here.”
Rodri, who was a driving force in City’s title triumph in the Premier League last season and Spain’s Euro 2024 success, has been tipped to be a Ballon d’Or contender.
