Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri may not be able to play again this season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri may miss the rest of the season because of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Spain Report stated on Monday. The talented 28-year forward hobbled off toward the end of the match in City’s English premier league match against Arsenal on Sunday with what was suspected to be a right knee injury. Spanish sports daily Marca and ESPN stated Monday that an MRI showed an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury. Rodri’s absence would be a big factor in City’s struggle to challenge for the Premier League title for the fifth consecutive time and oft-advertised desire to reclaim the Champions League.
The former Atletico Madrid player has not lost any of the recent 84 games across clubs and national teams.
Many fans have considered him to be a leading contender for the Ballon d’Or this year given his critical contributions to each of City’s most recent Premier League titles and Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
"Rodri is strong. He is off the pitch in this action because he has a feeling, otherwise Rodri remains on the pitch area,” Guardiola said after the Arsenal match.
‘I consider him as the best holding midfielder in the world, he can be a candidate for Ballon d’Or’. It also became clear that, despite Kroenke’s statements about the player’s desire to end his career at Arsenal, the player himself wants his team to continue developing and, “I’d love for him to win the Ballon d’Or.”
City were already light in cover for Rodri, and his absence leaves a vacant position in the middle of Guardiola’s midfield.
Rodri has also featured in the holding midfield position initially in the season as Mateo Kovacic had been eased back after his crucial performances in the Euro 2024 winning campaign.
Only last week, Rodri threatened that leading players might go on strike due to an ever-increasing schedule.
He played over 5,000 minutes across 63 games for City and Spain last season.
“I don’t know what is going to happen, but it’s something that worries us because we are the guys that suffer,” he said on the constant stress the players underwent physically and mentally.
In and out, someone has to look after us because we are the leading characters of this, say, game or whatever it is you’d like to term it – a sport, a business or what have you.
City will play Watford in the League Cup on Tuesday – which would be less than 48 hours after the Arsenal match.
