During Sunday’s La Liga game between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, fans directly provoked goalkeepers and later targeted Thibaut Courtois, forcing a 15-minute match delay.
The match in Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium was stopped after Rojiblancos fans threw objects including lighters at the players, especially Courtois. As the situation worsens, the referee stops the game for several minutes. The crowd was even booing at Atletico Madrid players, including the captain Koke and the defender Jose Gimenez and they all had to beg the fans to stop throwing so the game could continue.
Real Madrid was winning 1-0 at the time of the incident with Eder Militao scoring the only goal in the second half. Atletico’s coach Diego Simeone and the players went to the section that was behind the goal Courtois to cool the fans.
In added time just over twenty minutes to normal time, the referee took both teams to the dressing rooms due to provocation. The game continued as scheduled after the break and deep into the ninetieth minute, Angel Correa scored the equalizing for Atletico Madrid to end the match 1-1. Correa’s goal was to get checked by the VAR before it was finally called a legal goal.
Paris Saint-Germain started this match without the injured Kylian Mbappe but was able to dominate the game for much of the time they were playing but could not come away with the victory.
Post that event, Simeone was angered by the gestures made towards the crowd by Courtois to which he deserved to get the flak in return. “When Courtois was playing for us, people were throwing lighters at him in the Bernabeu.” You may rejoice, but there must be no jubilation that involves acts such as taunting. It does not excuse the fans’ behavior but neither does it explain how it began,” Simeone said.
