Lukaku Shines as Napoli Defeat Como to Stay Top of Serie A

Ciro Immobile scored another hat trick for Napoli but was flattered when he scored two penalties in the last two and a half minutes to clinch a 4-2 victory over Atalanta on Monday and keep Napoli on top of Serie A for at least another week. In the third minute, Lukaku teed up Scott McTominay for his first Serie A goal, a record. He then scored a penalty seven minutes into the second half and played the pass for David Neres’ late equalizer, which took Napoli four points clear of the second-placed team.

Napoli’s challengers for the Serie A crown, Juventus can get within one point of the leaders with a victory over Cagliari at home on Sunday.

Since joining Nepl for the season, under the guidance of former West Brom boss, Antonio Conte, Lukaku has settled exceptionally well, bagging three goals and four assists in five Serie A games. "We're getting there. It is going to take time because I joined late but I want to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans and we are doing well,” replied Lukaku to Sky.

Nevertheless, Napoli had a very difficult game with the newly promoted team, Como. Nico also featured in some of the shots that were closest in the first part of the match, before Gabriel Strefezza’s magnificent equalizer from a distance put paid the score in the last minute to half time.

The match crossed on and on until Neres struck again to make his second goal for Napoli in the 86th minute with a perfect cross from Lukaku.

Lukaku seems to be back to a Remix of the player who powered Inter Milan to the Serie A title last season. His pass also staked McTominay’s second goal for Napoli, after the Scottish player scored in the Italian Cup last month. McTominay, who switched Napoli from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, has been very influential in Napoli's midfield and a new addition that has brought new invention for Napoli.

McTominay speaking to the Sky said it was good for him to start well with a great pass from Romelu. As usual, it’s good to be scoring but I think we lost some discipline in the first half. It helps that we were able to change gears at half time, it had its dividends.”

Since the loss to Verona on the first week of the league, Napoli has only been perfect and unbeaten, and under Conte, the team has somewhat resemble the side that won their third Scudetto in 2023. In the last season, they failed to qualify for the European football competition they were defending champions.

‘We’re taking it game by game, trying to get as many victories as possible,’ said McTominay. “The team has been very helpful in assisting me to find my places and for that, we are only concentrating on the next match.”

Como, which is owned by Indonesian tobacco company Djarum, occupy 10th place with eight points after a good start in the top Italian league after their return in the current season after a 21-year absence.
