Liverpool are preparing for a potential transfer battle with European giants Real Madrid to sign RB Leipzig center-back Castello Lukeba, according to Fichaje.
The 21-year-old has been a revelation since arriving in the Bundesliga last summer from Olympique Lyonnais. He has become a central part of Marco Rose's side, who have conceded just five goals in the Bundesliga - the lowest rate of any team in Europe's top five leagues.
His performances this season have caught the attention of Liverpool, with Fichajes saying the Reds have expressed an interest in signing Lukeba, earmarking him as a key target to bolster their defensive ranks.
However, the Reds face stiff competition from European giants Real Madrid - who are taking on the Merseyside club in their pursuit of the French center-back, according to the report. The Spanish newspaper adds that the Red Bulls are reluctant to sell Lukeba to Liverpool, who see the Frenchman as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
With a contract at the Red Bull Arena running until 2029, Fichajes reports that Leipzig has set a fee of €90m (£75m) for the in-demand center-back, with Liverpool and Madrid ready to battle it out for the Frenchman.
Virgil van Dijk replacement?
Liverpool are preparing for the possible departure of club captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Even if the Dutchman signs a new deal at Anfield, he will be 34 next summer, so Liverpool will need to start looking ahead to the future with a long-term replacement. One of the players the Merseyside club is monitoring is Lukeba, as he has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe.
His game is characterized by an irresistible desire to win the ball back and his one-on-one compactness is one of his greatest qualities.
He also excels in defensive play despite pressure and is known for his aerial dominance.
While the 21-year-old's ability is indisputable, beating Madrid to secure Lukeba's transfer will not be easy and it will be interesting to see if the club is ready to match Leipzig's valuation.
