Lewandowski’s Brace Secures Hansi Flick’s First Victory with Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Hansi Flick's Barcelona secured a challenging 2-1 win over Valencia in their La Liga opener on Saturday. In his first attacking appearance as Barcelona head coach, Flick celebrated a victory as his team overcame a strong Valencia side led by Ruben Baraja.

Valencia took the lead within the forty fourth minute with an assist from Hugo Duro, but Lewandowski equalized just earlier than halftime, completing from close range. Early in the second half, the Polish striker converted a penalty to give Barcelona the lead.

With Real Madrid, featuring new superstar Kylian Mbappé, set to play on Sunday, Barcelona began their campaign with a large win at the intimidating Mestalla stadium. The win was all the more impressive as Barcelona were missing key players like Frenkie de Jong, Gavi and Ronald Araujo, who might have been better with them.Flick additionally fielded three 17-year-olds: Euro 2024 standout Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, and debutant Marc Bernal.

"In the second half, we performed much higher. Winning here, particularly at this stadium in Valencia, may be very difficult, so this victory is vital," Lewandowski told Movistar. "My aim is usually to attain, and it’s vital for my self-belief to start the season with these goals."

Flick was thrilled with his group's development after the ruins, acknowledging the mistakes made in the first half. "The second half became plenty better. "At the end of the first half, we recovered well, and in the second half, we significantly improved," Flick said.

Valencia had possibilities to grow their lead, however, Barcelona's defense, together with a goal-line clearance by using Cubarsí, held company. Lewandowski's penalty, with a bit of luck struck into the pinnacle nook, in the end secured the win. Despite having opportunities to extend their lead, Barcelona managed the game properly, keeping Valencia at bay.

Lewandowski had a late chance for a hat-trick but missed the target. Reflecting on the match, the veteran striker said: "We controlled the game in the last leg. This is the first step and now we have three more important games coming up in La Liga."
