Lewandowski emerges hero as Barcelona beat Getafe 1-0 in La Liga_fixture
BARCELONA: The Barca star striker was at his best again and was on the scoresheet in the 1-0 away win against Getafe on Wednesday and maintained the unbeaten run of the La Liga leaders.
The Polish striker received a pass in the first half and banged the ball into the net thus ensuring Barcelona snatched the seventh successive league victory. Barcelona could not add to their advantage although they had control of the game but that gave them a four-point lead over Real Madrid, who had beaten Alaves the previous day.
Since first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was out for nearly a year after a serious knee injury, Hansi Flick decided to start Inaki Peña on the bench. Peña, the goalkeeper who let in 32 goals in 17 Liga games last season, received chants of support and got the first real let off a Carles Perez header.
On the other side, the Getafe goalkeeper David Soria failed to control with his hands Jules Kounde’s cross, and Lewandowski headed into the only goal of the match in the 19th minute. This season 36- the 36-year-old striker, revitalized under Flick, bagged seven goals out of them and topped the La Liga goalscoring chart.
Youngster Lamine Yamal was particularly close to doubling the lead for Barcelona when he was set up by Raphinha, but his shot was off-target. The August Player of the Month recipient, Raphinha, tried to do the same again, but could only force the ball into Soria’s hands, before shooting at the wrong side of the goal.
The Catalans did not cease their attack and may have had another if Yamal was not denied by Soria with a brilliant free-kick that went on to sail, hitting the bars. Soria also saved Raphinha’s dangerous free-kick and a beach kicker by Yamal hit the bar and there were a host of complaints against Getafe due to their ill-tempered performance.
In the last ten minutes of the game, Raphinha could have grabbed the winner for the Blues, but he headed wide a nice pass into the box. Nonetheless, to everyone’s amazement, Getafe, who is 19th of in the Spanish league and still occupying that rank without a win in this campaign, could not capitalize on Barcelona's laxity. Even in a good late chance created for the visitors, Borja Mayoral could not manage to get a shot in.
Barça will next visit struggling Osasuna on Saturday, while second-placed Real Madrid face an upcoming Catalan derby against Athletic Bilbao, Atletico on Sunday.
