Yamal wears jersey no.19 for FC Barcelona and soon going to wear Spain’s most prestigious no.10.
The rejuvenated Barcelona midfielder Lamine Yamal has been handed the no 10 shirt for the Spanish side in the UEFA Nation League matches against Denmark and Serbia. Such a number is truly special it has been attributed to some of the legends in the world of football. It will be also the first time that Yamal will wear his current national number 10 shirt when playing for his club, FC Barcelona number 19 shirt.
Yamal’s progress for such a young talent has been meteoric, and he is only 17 years old at that. Some expected him to wear the Barcelona no.10 shirt, however, the club management saw fit to give him the no.19 shirt to reduce the pressure that comes associated with such a number. The number 10 jersey that was worn by Ronaldinho and was transferred to Lionel Messi, has a burden. Barcelona lent it to Messi throughout his entire illustrious career and he became one of the club’s all-time legends.
When Messi left, Ansu Fati took up the No.10 jersey, but he could not perform as expected in it. Fati stayed with the number though many Catalan media houses believe Yamal could replace Fati and wear the number at Barca shortly.
As for now, Yamal has the privilege to wear number ‘10’ in the Spanish team. Teenager assisted Spain in winning the Euro 2024 which was rather clinched on England with a 2-1 score line in the finals. With the Spanish team already set to face Denmark and Serbia in their subsequent matches, Yamal should again be heavily involved.
At the club level, Yamal has risen to the occasion this season for Barcelona; he has provided five assists and scored four goals out of the 9 games played. His form this time has enabled Barcelona to reach the apex of the La Liga and more success from him adds to speculations for when he will finally wear the famed number 10 shirt at Camp Nou.
