England striker Harry Kane had to be substituted after getting a knock as Bayern Munich were held to a 1- 1 draw by Leverkusen at home on Saturday.
Having been triggered by Robert Andrich in the 31st minute, Leverkusen equalized after only eight minutes to the surprise of many onlookers when Aleksandar Pavlovic launched a long-range shot. Kane, who played for England who had a subdued match, limped off the field in the 86th after a challenge with Leverkusen’s Amine Adli.
It is unclear how serious the injury is, according to Bayern coach Vincent Kompany: “It is too early for that prognosis,” However, the coach is optimistic that Kane will return to the field in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Aston Villa. “I am not sure about the specifics but as far as I understand, it is just soreness and he ought to be back this week,” said Kompany.
Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl said after the match, “It is a big loss when Harry is substituted during a match because he is a very hard-working player. That does not appear very good, but we are optimistic he’s healthy enough, and there’s no fracture.”
Gnabry could have single-handedly won it for Bayern in the second half as Bayern hit the crossbar twice but Leverkusen defended well to take a point from the match. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer expressed his frustration: “We deserved more. At least I believe we had some good efforts going forward that converted better than the other team. The goal that we conceded was frustrating.”
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was pleased with his team’s discipline and effort: When you are playing against Bayern, it means that you have to be compact and you have to make those sacrifices. We limited their opportunities and we got ourselves a precious point.
Before the break, Bayern had been the dominant side and their best opportunity came in the 19th minute when Michael Olize’s free-kick went inches wide. Even when they dominated the ball, Leverkusen was reduced to the role of pursuing a comeback after Pavlovic’s error gifted Andrich the chance to sweep home a low shot for the virtual carbon copy of a similar corner. Pavlovic equalized for the home side minutes later from a distance to make it a tie again.
The second half was nearly over when Bayern threatened again, and Gnabry banged both the post from a good Kane layoff. At the end of the match, both sides could have been satisfied with the draw result although Bayern had a three-point lead over Leverkusen. However, the addition of Kane’s injury raises questions ahead of the stern fixture list.
In another Bundesliga match, Benjamin Sesko netted two goals in five first-half minutes as RB Leipzig pummelled Augsburg 4-0 at home. Sesko also contributed a goal for 21-year-old Xavi Simons who, in turn, provided an assist for Lois Openda. The clearest opportunity Augsburg had was a neatly missed penalty in the first half.
Stuttgart, who had fished second last season, had to muster a stoppage-time equalizer from Deniz Undav to share the points at Wolfsburg 2-2. A first-half free-kick by Jonas Wind put Wolfsburg ahead in the first half but Enzo Millot came from the bench to level for Stuttgart from the spot kick Volley result, even though his penalty kick was initially saved. Atakan Karazor of the home side Stuttgart was given a straight red card for a foul in the second half; however, Mohammed Amoura struck to put Wolfsburg in front. That is why the late goal scored by Undav made sure that Stuttgart settled for a draw.
Other matches saw St Pauli gain a top-division win since February 2011 has seen them strolling past Freiburg 3-0 with two goals from Elias Saad and one from Dapo Afolayan. Freiburg had two goals disallowed for offside rulings.
The wheels were held to a 1-0 home win for Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 96th minute by Tomas Cvancara’s goal, cutting Union Berlin’s unbeaten streak. While Heidenheim triumphed 2-0 over 10-men Mainz.
Harry Kane, the England team captain who had been most active with his strikes, albeit in front of goal, immediately hobbled off the pitch in the 86th minute when he clashed with Leverkusen’s Amine Adli.
The treble champions Bayern Munich had been superb in the Bundesliga for 11 years before Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen gave German football a surprise last year by completing a league and cup season without losing a single game.
