It has been stated by his family, that former Premier League player George Baldock died when he was only 31 years old. The Guardian quoting the police in Greece said that the defender was discovered lifeless in his swimming pool in the southern part of Athens. Baldock could not be resuscitated by police attempts to carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to Reuters.
In a statement published by the Mirror, Baldock's family expressed their grief: As for George, we can state he is no longer with us as he has sadly died. For this we are a family we are undoubtedly in shock after losing such a calamity. The statement says: “We request for your indulgence during this time of mourning.”
The 28-year-old, who signed for Greek side Panathinaikos in May 2024 completed over 200 appearances for Sheffield United. By the end of the 2023/24 season, he played 13 Premier League matches before joining the Greek league. He also was capped 12 times for the Greek national side; he was able to represent the nation through his paternal grandmother.
Sheffield United released a statement mourning Baldock's passing: ‘The club has received the news of the death of George Baldock with great horror and grief. We all at XXX lost an excellent employee who was with us for seven years, and we wish his family and friends well.
Similarly, Panathinaikos said in the statement, “We can’t believe that George is gone.” Everyone in the whole Panathinaikos family has suffered this loss due to his death and we are standing by with his family.
Memorials for Baldock are set to be cast during the next England-Greece upcoming UEFA Nations League game. Baldock was born in England but he was supporting Greek colors when playing internationally. Even though he cannot be included in Greece’s latest squad, the Hellenic Football Federation himself expressed that they are heartbroken to lose such young talent and added that words cannot express the overall pain.
England and Greece players will wear black armbands on their October 10 match at Wembley Stadium and according to UEFA, a minute silence will be observed before the start of the match. This will also be so in the forthcoming match between Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
It might interest the readers to know that old Baldock was born in Buckingham, England, in April 1993. He started his professional career with the MK Dons in the same 2009 but left the club after 8 years after having his loan spells with Northampton Town, Tamworth, Oxford United, and IBV of Iceland. That winter, he joined Sheffield United in 2017 when he had the best form of his career, contributing to the promotion of the Blades twice to the premier league.
Baldock terminated his contract with the cpma in 2024 then joined Panathinaikos on a three-year contract and has featured three times in the Greek Super League. He has been playing internationally for Greece since 2022 and has been capped 12 times, the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign included.
The world of football and society mourns for Baldock as he was a VERY important figure who contributed a lot to the evolution of this sport in England.
