Barcelona fans, get ready! The Catalan club has not wasted time and sealed their first big saga in the form of a Polish custodian Wojciech Szczesny the contract which will expire on 30/06/2025. This signing is to be an emergency, in particular, because Marc-Andre ter Stegen is unlikely to play for the club in this current season.
Szczesny has been enticed back into management from retirement by the Blaugrana after he enjoyed a successful managerial career at Juventus. The 33-year-old has the experience of having played for premier clubs such as Arsenal, Roma, and Juventus, therefore, a trophy chest as well.
Being an FA Cup winner with Arsenal and a current Juventus player who took over from the world’s best keeper, Buffon, Szczesny is perfectly suited for Barcelona. With over 500 senior appearances and 75 coming in the Champions League, he is well-versed on the importance of performing on the big stage.
He has also played 84 times for his nation, Poland, and has played in two World Cups and four European Championship football tournaments – an indication of a player who can rise to the occasion.
Sczesny to Deputise Ter Stegen
Barcelona signed Szczesny after their first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, got a season-ending injury. When Ter Stegen was out, academy graduate Inaki Pena took his place, but to guarantee a stable performer at the back, the place called for a more experienced option. There were even pictures of Szczesny present at Barcelona’s Champions League match against Young Boys where Barcelona won 5-0, showing a glimpse of his new home.
Szczesny will now become the second Polish player in the Club’s men’s team history after joining compatriot; Robert Lewandowski. The two have 71 caps for the Poland national team and the presence of both additional leadership and familiarity as the team aims to improve could be a bonus.
