FC Barcelona is expected to sign a rising star of Argentine football, although the competition could be tough for the player.
The Catalans have had a good season under Hansi Flick. Their 4-1 UEFA Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday was their best performance in recent encouraging months. They now prepare to face Real Madrid in Saturday's Clasico.
The club, however, continues to look to the future as they look to build a team capable of meeting the challenge in the coming years, and it seems they have set their sights on an exceptional talent in River Plate. According to Catalan publication Sport, Barca is closely monitoring the development of Felipe Esquivel, a 16-year-old who is yet to make a first-team appearance with River Plate but has impressed with their youth and reserve teams.
The report says there is a €30 million release clause in Esquivel's contract, which expires in December 2026, although it appears River is willing to negotiate over potential transfer fees.
Who is the Barcelona target, Felipe Esquivel?
Esquivel is a right forward who is part of River Plate's youth team.
A youth international from Argentina, he has proven to be a talent to watch while playing for River Plate's youth and reserve side, although he is yet to get his chance in the first team. He signed his first professional contract in June 2024.
FIFA rules regarding players under the age of 18 mean Esquivel is not expected to join Barca for at least two years, even if a transfer is agreed. Instead, he is likely to move to the club once he turns 18 and possibly stay at River on a loan deal until then.
