Arsenal Sporting Director Edu Announces Departure from the Club
Edu's departure will be seen as a huge blow to Arsenal and, according to many rumors, will prompt a rematch at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian has been linked with a role with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and his network of clubs.
A former Arsenal player, Edu joined the club in 2019 as technical director, six months before Mikel Arteta was appointed manager.
He was tasked with overseeing all aspects of the first team, including implementing the club's football philosophy, promoting the best academy players, and improving transfer activities. Edu was appointed to his current position, the club's first sporting director, in 2022.
He has played a very important role in Arsenal's rise under Arteta, who sees the Brazilian as a key ally. Together, the pair rebuilt the Gunners squad and turned the team into title contenders after years of decline.
Edu has previously said how proud he is to have backed Arteta to "change the way people see our club and the view people have of Arsenal compared to the past".
The 46-year-old is regarded as one of the best sporting directors in the world, having helped bring in the likes of captain Martin Odegaard, defensive duo William Saliba and Gabriel, and club record signing Declan Rice at the club, while getting rid of many. paid unwanted players like Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil.
Arteta will later address the media on Tuesday ahead of Arsenal's Champions League game against Inter on Wednesday.
