From several reports, it has emerged that Arsenal is prepared to pay 105 million pounds as a transfer fee for Wirtz a Bayer Leverkusen midfielder in 2025. At 21 years old and often considered one of the best young players to emerge from Europe, he was playing a critical role in the team when it was rampant in winning the Bundesliga title last season without a loss.
Further, the 2023 speculated 19-year-old Wirtz recovered amazingly from a serious knee injury that has made him face partial matches in the 2022-23 season generating 18 goals and 20 assists in the 2023-24 season from 49 matches across all tournaments. Since the Euro 2024 qualification campaign where Germany reached the quarter-finals, he has been in good form this current campaign season where he has scored 6 goals and has 1 assist in 7 outings.
Wirtz is at present contracted to Leverkusen until the summer of the next three seasons; he chose to remain with the team of Xabi Alonso. Nevertheless, other top European clubs beginning to show interest in him could prove tussling for Leverkusen to retain him in the 2025 season.
Gunners locked horns with some of the most successful teams on the continent for Wirtz
Wirtz is a talented young player Arsenal has set their eyes on to capture; clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich are expected to bid for the player. A report by SPORTBild revealed that Wirtz’s preferred destination is Arsenal which is willing to spend £100 million to make him the club’s most expensive signing eclipsing Declan Rice in 2023. The offers from the Gunners are said to be hovering around €150 million (£125.3 million) to land the Wirtz signature.
Arsenal has been tracking the 20-year-old since he was with Cologne where he was from 2010 to 2020. He also rejected an opportunity to transfer to England for his further development at his training club in Germany. Now, however, Wirtz is ready to join the big money shift to the Premier League because he sees his chances of conquering the Champions League and winning the Ballon d’Or as somehow larger in the English league.
However, for now, he is still playing for Wirtz’s favorite team – Leverkusen, but in summer, many clubs will probably offer the highly skilled midfielder many contracts because he has scored 47 goals and has made 51 assistances during 159 competitive games for Leverkusen. Most memorable, he was able to find the back of the nets twice in Euro 2024 before being knocked out by Spain by Arsenal new signing, Mikel Merino.
Potential Role at Arsenal
Wirtz mainly operates as a playmaker and has been more of an upfront number 10 this season in the 2024-25 season. Nonetheless, since Martin Ødegaard is Arsenal captain and is fixed in that position unless he is injured, Wirtz is the versatility the team needs. This is particularly interesting for Arsenal as he plays in the Left wing for the national team although he is equally effective on the right wing.
Gabriel Martinelli also has failed to find his shooting boots since the 2023-24 season and Leandro Trossard, who is set for 30 years this year has had a bid from the Saudi Pro League rejected. Wirtz could be the player that Arsenal needs to strengthen their attacking squad during the mid-season transfer window.
