Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez banned for ‘offensive behavior’ of two World Cup games says AFA on Saturday. The 32-year-old Aston Villa player was also charged with ‘breaking the fair play rules’ on two occasions. Martinez provoked the violation of FIFA’s code of conduct when he celebrated Argentina’s World Cup qualifier match against Chile on September 5 by cupping a replica of the Copa America trophy to his groin.
Argentina was utilizing penalties to conquer France during the 2022 World Cup final then Martinez was involved in a similar act when using the Golden Glove trophy.
FIFA also punished Martinez for throwing his gloves and striking the camera of a TV Cameraman after Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Colombia on September 10.
The AFA did not hide their displeasure with FIFA’s tripartite dealing at all.
“The Argentine Football Association disagrees with the ruling made by the FIFA disciplinary committee,” the statement said.
Following this ban, Martinez will be out of action for Argentina’s upcoming FIFA World Cup Group qualification matches against Venezuela on October, 10 and Bolivia four days later.
In the South American qualification round Argentina has 18 points after eight matches, which is two points ahead of Colombia.
